Search Engine Optimization - 101
SEO and Search Engine Marketing
By: Wicksell Metellus on 20 June 2008

Search engines like Google and Yahoo play an important role in traffic going to your site and are usually a starting point for internet users looking for online services and products.

I am here to help you take advantage of the traffic that search engines bring to your site. Using best practices of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) we can help you get better page positioning and increase your traffic through search, in-turn increasing your potential to sell our products, which of course will help you meet your commission goals.

Important numbers on Search:comScore Search Study

U.S. internet user searches has  increased over the past 3 years

       30 percent increase, in 2007 vs. 2006

52 searches per month per user in 2006, 74 searches per month in 2007

In 2007 there were over 206 million unique searches in North America. There were 60 million searches total

Optimizing your tags:

The SEO items we will cover this month are the tags on your pages. Most important are your Title and Description tags. By making the copy in these two tags relevant to the user’s search criteria and using your targeted keywords, you can help your site get listed higher in search engines and in turn increase clicks to your site.

Example of a bad Title Tag:

Johns Shoes – Home Page

Example of bad Description Tag:

Johns shoes is the best online shoe store. We are #1!!!

Example of a good Title Tag:

From Progressive.com

Auto Insurance - Car Insurance Quotes from Progressive. Motorcycle, Boat and RV Insurance.

Example of a good Description Tag:

Online car insurance quotes from Progressive Auto Insurance. Compare car insurance rates for auto insurance companies. Find an auto insurance agent/broker. Save money on auto, motorcycle, boat and RV insurance with Progressive.

For example, when “Car Insurance Quotes” was searched for in Google, Progressive was the first on the list in the SERP (Search Engine Results Page):

Google SERP - Search Engine Results Page

Notice how the key phrase searched for “Car Insurance Quotes” is bolded by Google. Right beneath this is the description, from the Description tag. Again, the key phrase is bolded and the description gives the customer an idea of what can be found on Progressive.com.

Keep the Title and Description tags unique on your pages:

It is important to not have duplicate Title and Description tags on different pages. Having unique copy in your tags across your site will help optimize each page on your site individually.
