Blogs - Local Or International?
Affiliate Marketing
By: William Lau on 24 March 2008
Many affiliates are bloggers, simply because it's free and doesn't take a lot of time to set up. Within 5 minutes you could be writing your first post, with all your ads at the ready to convert. And let's assume that the main aim of the blog is to make some money.

But before you do that, you have to think about content. What are you going to put on it? And how will it stand out amongst the millions of other blogs out there?

In an environment where anyone can shout out whatever they want for free, the resulting cacophony is so great that few ever gets heard.

Question is- local or international. Do you write about something you know intimately, like local restaurant reviews, and appeal to those in your vicinity? Or do you write about something that is universally relatable, like losing weight?

Now, one of the pros of going local is that you can get sponsors and other local perks by local companies, like free movie passes, invites to exclusive events etc. Many companies are now viewing top bloggers as formidable media outlets and will happily extend a review unit or an invite to them.

Previously, only large media organizations will enjoy such priviledges. In fact, I know a blogger who's got a deal with Nokia and receives free phones periodically and gets flown to new product launches. So these perks may be worth more than commission dollars from an affiliate program.

Going international, your doors are open to the hundreds of millions of internet users around the world. But it's also harder to get noticed. Without much original content/ insider scoops that some sites have, it's almost impossible to compete. But pull it off, and you'll be rewarded well.

That said, I'd recommend going local. It's easier, more fun, and if you're good enough, regional and international traffic will follow.
