SEO - Improving Keywords for Search Engines
SEO and Search Engine Marketing
By: David Tan on 11 March 2008
There are many aspects to SEO (Search Engine Marketing) such as in improving keywords, links, metatags, content, domains/urls. But what does it mean to improve the keywords? What do people really mean when they say that you need to have more 'linkbacks'.

Also, there are many methods that you can utilize to improve these different aspects of SEO on your site with some having a bigger impact than others. In fact, if you do it the wrong way, you can even cause a negative effect.

Let's explore keywords for this article. Your whole site is filled with content and articles. Words, words everywhere. Yet, which ones do search engines value more? The following are the top 5 keywords sections that are higher valued by search engines:-

Keywords in the <title> tag - Consider that what you put here actually appears in search results as the page title. That's not all, it's also better to place the keywords that you are targeting near the beginning.

Keywords found in the URL - You know, like if you target 'superman', to have a the link to your page like so:- http://www.somethingsomething.com/superman-man-of-steel.html. Still, it works only if you also have the keyword 'superman' in the same page.

Keyword density - Maximize the frequency of the keyword appearing without becoming suspiciously like keyword stuffing. What's the limit? Try 3-8% for your major keywords.

Keywords in those <h1> or <h2>, etc heading tags - A place where these keywords are valued higher. Again, other parts of the page must also have these keywords.

Keywords in anchor text - the keywords in the text links.

There are other places like the one in <alt> tags, metatags, etc which carry some lesser value. Remember the avoid killers like keyword stuffing (more than 10% density), Excessively repeated keywords or too long sentences in tags which either dilutes it's value or getting you banned from search engines.
